A new test aiming to rank the UK’s networks by reliability has come out strongly in favour of O2.
The result is a major success for O2, particularly when it comes to servicing clients who are regularly on the road moving from city to city. With a wide range of ‘wins’ from Maidstone to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, they remain the network of choice for business in the UK.
The test, by GWS, aims to combine user focus group feedback with scientific testing of the major networks. The tests were carried out in 32 major cities and towns across the UK, with O2 scoring the highest in 17 locations. Glasgow, Liverpool and Southampton were among the cities where O2 took victory, highlighting the breadth of their nationwide coverage.
GWS asked users about their experience of the major networks as well as conducting specialist testing using equipment attached to iOS and Android devices. The test is claimed to be the ‘first of its kind’ in the UK, giving a fair reflection of performance and user experience.
Amongst O2’s rivals, 3 scored highest in 12 of the remaining cities, whilst EE scored best in 3. Vodafone did not rank as the most reliable network in any of the cities tested.
GWS’ data also sought to highlight what users see as the most valuable features of their network. Whilst there has been a clamour in the press over the last few years focusing on the rollout of higher speed networks, GWS’ data showed that users value network reliability twice as highly as they value having a high speed network. The message from consumers seems to be that the speed of a network doesn’t matter if you can’t get on to it in the first place. GWS highlighted the same point, saying that their data indicated that every major network was fast enough to stream a film on Netflix but that users’ responses indicated this was not one of their main concerns.
The research also looked at how networks could be damaging their users’ trust in them when they encounter issues around reliability. 28% of people give up on their phones altogether if they lose signal. The data also suggests that half a million 18-24 year olds have thrown their mobile phone out of frustration at lack of network reliability.
Consumers also indicated their frustration with so-called ‘no spots’ across the UK. Birmingham, Leeds and London came out top of the cities with the most dropped or blocked calls.
